In a Town History of Pineville, NC, birthplace of President Polk, it states that the first white settler was a Thomas Spratt. It states that he was followed by Thomas Polk, the eldest son of a former neighbor and that Thomas Polk married Spratt's daughter Susan. A brother of Thomas Polk followed and married a sister of Susan Spratt. Another brother Ezekial (grandfather of the President I would guess) married Mary Wilson. According to ancestry.com Susan Spratt was born in Accomac VA. This would seem to indicate that the ancestors of President Polk came from Accomac VA unless the Carlisle PA Polks migrated to western NC via Accomac VA. It seems to me that we have two distinct Polk families migrating into western NC in the 1750's. Genealogists in the 1840-1915 time period may have mixed them up creating a Gordian Knot of genealogy. Luckily the two families have very distinct DNA, not being related in the male line within 20000 or perhaps even 40000 years, so DNA testing should eventually be a great help in unraveling the knot. Of course the family lore of the Polk brothers following their Spratt girlfriends may be incorrect. Info on the birth of Susan Spratt may also be wrong as I have not found a source for it. However Accomac makes sense, as I believe that there were Polks there at the time Susan Spratt is reputed to have been born there. Ned Fleet
