Hello Bill and CC. I found your information interesting CC, and thought from reading the first post of this discussion that you might be a lawyer.... my son is also a lawyer and I recognize the argument format... I have been working with Bill for about six years, at times, and found his research remarkable... I know the following information as fact (as factual records go) and I can prove by deeds and wills: My great-grand Mother is Margaret A Polk b1850 that married James M Johnson in Anson County, NC... Margaret is the daughter of Thomas Polk Jr b1802 and Sarah Brooks b1805 in Union County, NC, which until 1796 was Anson County. Thomas Polk Jr is the son of Thomas Polk Sr b1757, approx.. wife unknown to me... I have researched this line and have proof that Thomas Polk Sr lived on Watson's Creek and Richardson's Creek in Anson County, now Union County, NC. (Watson's Creek is a small branch that runs into Richardson Creek near Polk Mountain, Union Co. NC). Thomas Sr owned land on Watson's Creek, Richardson's Creek and Clear Creek in Anson County, now Union County, NC. All the land that I can find listed that Thomas Sr owned is land that he purchased, or was granted. I cannot find records of land transfers from any of his family. Therefore, I cannot find any information about his parentage. I cannot find records of military Service in the Revolutionary War, but found records that he served in the Anson County militia and was a Justice of the Peace in Anson County after the war . I have theorized for several years that this Thomas Sr might be a son of William Polk/MT of Mecklenburg County, NC, but the link is not documented. DAR placed a marker on Thomas Sr's land in 1953 that has misleading and erroneous information. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jganis/unionco/ThomasPolkCemetery.html It gives the correct dates for Thomas' birth and death, but says that he formed the 4th NC Reg't and was its Col. Lots of documentation that Col/Gen Thomas Polk of Mecklenburg County formed this unit. This marker has confused many people in that Thomas Sr of Anson/Union County is confused with Col Thomas Polk of Mecklenburg. Mis-labeled markers and documents has led to a problematic search for our Polk ancestors. I think that the only way that a reasonable solution will be found is through open discussions and scientific methods. Theories are a good starting place for discussion, but must be considered as such. Theories, by definition are not facts, and should only be used to transmit ideas. Thanks for your effort and knowledge, and I look forward to following this thread. bob johnson Notify Administrator about this message?
