Hi Mary & Sande,
Maybe I can add a couple of items to Mary’s excellent research.
There are 1920 & 1930 U.S. census records for the Wojciech & Vera Jurkowski family as well as a WW I Draft Registration card and a Cook County Circuit Court U.S. Naturalization Index for Wojciech Jurkowski.
The 1920 U.S. Census is indexed on Ancestry.com as George Jurkowski living at 4508 W. Thomas Street in Chicago Ward 35, Cook County, IL (present-day zip code 60651).
The 1930 U.S. Census is indexed on Ancestry.com as George “Jackowski” living at 2402 78th Court in Leyden, Cook County, IL (present-day zip code 60707).
Wojciech/George Jurkowski was born on October 5 (or18), 1885 in Austria Poland. He married Weronika/Veronica/Vera Sokol on February 11, 1911 at St. Ann’s (Polish) Roman Catholic Church located at 1840 South Leavitt Street in Chicago, IL 60608, telephone (773) 733-7486. Veronica was born in Poland between 1897 and 1899. They had two (2) sons, both born in Chicago: Edward/Edmond born between 1913 and 1914 and John born between 1915 and 1916. Wojciech immigrated to the U.S. between 1907 and 1908. Veronica immigrated between 1909 and 1911. Wojciech was naturalized a U.S. citizen between 1920 and 1930. Wojciech was employed as a machinist in 1920 and a boiler maker in 1930
There is a WW I Draft Registration Card for a Wojciech “Jorkowski”. According to the document, he was born on October 18, 1885 in “Niasanda” Austria. At the time of his registration on June 5, 1917, he was living with his wife and two (2) children at 4508 Thomas Street in Chicago. He was employed as a machinist with “Simons” Brothers located at 1781 Webster.
Finally, there is a Cook County Circuit Court U.S. Naturalization Index for a Wojciech “Jorkowski”. It indicates that Wojciech made his citizenship declaration on May 6, 1916. That he was born on October 5, 1885 in “Newsanda” Austria and arrived in the U.S. from Hamburg, Germany on March 18, 1906. At the time that he filed his papers, he was living at 2237 West 18th Street in Chicago (around the corner from St. Ann’s). He was employed as a machinist.
I will email you copies of the documents discussed above.
Norbert
