Hello Jerry Chappell... Regarding the Amos Perry line posted at the perry-dna site. I emailed the link under the kit for Amos, but evidently the address jpc@perrychappell.com is no longer active. I also tried the perrychappell.com address only to find the message "Under Construction."

I have not yet found the parents of Amos (father of Gardner); however, I do have some questions about relationships described at the perry-dna site. I assume you or yours posted those relationships and so assume you can help identify the sources that confirm those relationships.

I believe some of the information provided in the section on Amos may be incorrect or at least yet to be substantiated. The final statement reads:

"AMOS PERRY b.c.1821 ;died 1888 Wilmington NC. Boat captain on Cape Fear River steamer before and during Civil War. He had sons, AMOS , Benjamin and JAMES.All lived in Wilmington NC area."

I have found no conclusive evidence that this Amos Perry is the son of Gardiner and Catherine Dudley.... although if there is evidence, I am happy to know of it. My research shows that the son of Gardiner and Catherine named Amos married a woman named Ann who was previously married to a man with the surname James. And so Ann James and Amos Perry are listed in the North Carolina Marriage Bonds and the North Carolina Marriage Collection with the date 17 Dec 1845. They also appear in the 1850 census in Fayetteville listed with Ann's children by Mr. James. Amos' occupation is as a boat carpenter. Amos' younger brother John later married Ann's daughter, Sarah James. By 1860 Amos is no longer in the household. Ann is living alone in Fayetteville in 1860, but is living with her daughter Sarah and son-in-law (brother-in-law) John by 1870. In the 1880 census she is identified as widowed.

While I recognize that it is possible that Amos abandoned Ann and started a new family, I have not yet found any conclusive evidence to confirm that the Amos Perry of Fayetteville in 1850 and the Amos Perry of Wilmington in 1860 are the same person.

As far as the Wilmington family goes, I have only found two ietms that clearly reference the family you mention:

1. the 1860 census record with M Perry, Sophia, Ben, and Amos

2. a death certificate for Benjamin Perry (born in Fayetteville) that lists his father as Amos or Amon Perry (born in France) and his mother as Sophia Jane Davis (born in Cumberland). Benjamin is listed as a farmer in Jacksonville, NC which is interesting since that is the area where the family of Alice Lillibridge (wife of Amos and mother of Gardiner) is from.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best, Deirdre
