Hi all, I am trying to trace down anything I may be able to about my great grandmother. She was born Jean Perry (according to her marriage certificate) and her parents were Joseph Perry (who her marriage certificate says is a 'sea captain') and Sarah (maiden name 'Bennett). Her marriage entry says she was born in Philadelphia US. from what I can gather from aged relatives there is some belief that this was not the large city Philadelphia in the US but a town somewhere in the southern states of the US. Her marriage entry (from 1915 in Melbourne Australia) says she was 32 then, making her birthdate roughly 1883. She had married someone else by the name of Dickens previously (and had had at least one child by him) before marrying James Joseph Blake in Melbourne, Australia, in 1915. How she got to Australia, or why she came, is unknown, and it is believed that she came to Australia circa 1912-1915, and lived for a time in Sydney. It is known that she could not write, but that she could sing and play an accordion. The few photographs of her that survive indicate that it is quite likely she may have been (part?) American Indian (and this would accord with family belief). It is believed that after she came to Australia she had no contact with family in the US before she died in 1964. If anyone out there happens to know of a Joseph Perry and Sarah Bennett marrying and having children (in the later half of the 19th century in the US), or happens to know of a Jean Perry who simply disappeared from the records somehow, I would love to hear from you.
