Many of the local Boston and New London Militia who engaged the Pequots in this War became the original settlers of coastal Connecticut in the 1630s. As previously mentioned, a stockaded "fort" of Pequots near New London (originally named "Pequod") was over-run, and the inhabitants escaped along the coast of Long Island Sound. The local militia chased them, eventually cornering them in a swamp in what is now Fairfield Connecticut. There they were surrounded, starved and subsequently slaughtered. There was a lot of ugliness on both sides of this fight. The militia remembered the coastline and returned to settle. The towns of Fairfield and Stratford Connecticut were originally settled,not by Royal Grant, nor as satellites of previous colonies, but by returning militia claiming the spoils of war. Incorrectly, it turned out, because the Pequots did not own that territory to begin with, they were just running through it. It was Paugusset territory.
