My husband's great great grandpa was Francis Marion Green, b 1835 in Illinois according to census, but may have been born in Tennessee, then moved with his pars to Ill at an early age. He d 27 Apr 1881 near Dexter, Stoddard, MO and was bur at Hagy Cemetery, Dexter, Stoddard, MO. We have visited the grave and he has a nice tombstone. He md Nancy M. or E. Pepper 9 May 1865, Monroe Co., Ill. Monroe county is just across the Mississippi River from southeast MO, not far from Stoddard county. This was found in Marriage Book Vol 3, Monroe Co, Ill.
Ok, they had ch: Martin V. Green, b 1859, MO and James Green 1860, Ohio. These boys are b before their marr date, not impossible, not uncommon. However, Marion would have been 30 y/o in 1865 when they md, he could have had a prior wife. Or, Nancy could have brought the boys with her to the marr. We don't know, it's a lot of speculation and we are hoping someone who can help us with these folks will recognize them.
On the 1860 census for Mt. Auburn, Christian Co, Ill, Marion is listed with his brother Leander's family.
Leander Green, 32, farmer, 800, 800, b KY ?
Mary E, Green, 29, domestic, Ill
Charles M. Green, 7, Ill
William F. Green, 2, Ill
Marion F. Green, 23, Ill
Nancy is not mentioned, so she had probably not entered the picture as yet.
On the 1870 census for Monroe Co, Ill Marion Greens family is listed:
Marion Green,35, farmer, 1200, 500, b Kentucky?
Nancy Green, 27, Keeping house, Missouri
James Green, 10, at school, Ohio
Martin Green, 11, at school, Missouri
also listed was Jas Black,25, farm laborer, Ill
On the 1870 O'Fallon, St. Clair, Ill Census is listed:
Rob Pepper,27, farmer, Missouri
Amelia Pepper, 25, keeping house, Missouri
A. Laura Pepper, 8, at home, Ill
Martha A. Pepper, 2, at home, Ill
Then, listed on the 1880 census, Stoddard Co, MO:
32/33 Marion Green, 45, Ill
Nancy Green, 35, Missouri
33/34 Robbert Pepper, 51, MO, chronic diarrhea (the most common cause for this diarrhea which was an amoebic dysentery, was exposure from bad water during the Civil War, Marions brother Leander also had it and was terribly plagued with suffering the rest of his life and he lived to be an old man in spite of it, I plan to try to get a Civil War military and pension file on him)
Emly Pepper 35, wife, I believe Amelia had d and Robert marr again
Lorry (common nickname for Laura), 13, daughter
Martha, 11, daughter
Johny, 3, son
Japhe (as best I can make it out), 1, son
Now, these two families were living side by side, no other Greens or Peppers around, I believe there was a familial relationship between Nancy and Robert. Was he her father, he was old enough, even though his second wife was the same age as Nancy. Was he her brother? Were the two families close, more than relatives, but friends, Most likely.
Anyway, I am hoping, hoping, hoping, hoping somebody out there can help me with these families, particulary the Peppers, as I have been pounding my head against the wall over them.
