One of my Pelham ancestors from Wellington, NZ, was sent the following clipping in the late 1800's , which fortunately wasn't tossed out. "BISHOP PELHAM Bishop Pelham, ex-Bishop of Norwich, is dead. The Right Rev and Hon J T Pelham, the deceased Bishop, was brother of the third Earl of Chichester. He was born in 1811 and educated at Oxford, and became Rector of Burgh Apton, afterwards Incumbent of Christ Church, Hamstead, and in 1855 rector of Marylebone. In 1857 he became Bishop of Norwich." The Bishop was John Thomas Pelham d. 1 May 1894, son of Thomas Pelham (2nd Earl of Chichester) and Mary Henrietta Juliana Osborne. The 3rd Earl was Henry Thomas Pelham, d. 1886. My questions: 1. After scouring the web for information about the Earls of Chichester, I found the following: Francis Godolphin Pelham--A burial (no date) at St. Mary's Church, Lambeth, London, indicating he was "Earl of Chichester & Rector of the Parish between 1884-1894" Was he the 4th Earl? 2. Walter John Pelham, b. 1838 Falmer--found a reference to him being Earl of Chichester. Was he the 5th Earl? 3. And out of curiosity, who is the current Earl of Chichester? Interested if the Pelham name continues to be associated. Thank you. Nancy, USA http://www.geocities.com/kiwicanuck1919/pelham/pelham.html
