I am looking for any information about the marriages of Joseph Payne first to Hannah Wilson and second to Martha Wright. I need proof of the marriages. I do not know where or when either marriage took place. I do know for certain that Joseph's will on July 23, 1822 in Smith Co., TN names wife Martha. Joseph came from a Quaker family, but I do not have access to those records. Joseph Payne, son of Josiah, was born in Chester(?) Co., PA and then moved to Orange Co., NC, where his daughter Martha was born(?). I have also seen an unproven claim of his residence in Goochland Co., VA around 1774. Daughter Martha married George Rowland Jr of Guilford Co., NC, bordering Orange Co., ca. 1790. Joseph Payne and wife Martha (Wright?) moved to what was afterward called Payne's Bend of the Cumberland River in Smith County, TN. George Rowland Jr and wife Martha Payne (dau of Joseph) lived on land that came from Joseph's estate (Martha Payne Rowland's dower). I am trying to prove Martha Payne Rowland's mother (Martha Wright?). Joseph's first wife is rumored to be Hannah Wilson. It is known from county marriage records that a Jean Wilson married George Rowland Sr in 1772 in Guilford Co., NC (this is father of the George Jr who married Martha Payne). What are the interconnections, if any, between Hannah Wilson (dau of Aquilla? I think not- see below) and Jean Wilson of about the same generation. I know an individual who has completed the mtDNA test for her maternal line. We have solid records tracing back through Martha (Payne) Rowland, wife of George Rowland Jr. Her test results should match with another female who can trace her maternal line back to any female ancestor of Martha (daughter of Joseph Payne). We would also like to get that accomplished. More information: In unsourced internet genealogies, Hannah Wilson, the daughter of Aquilla Wilson, was born in 1769. Her birth in MD at this date makes it impossible for this Hannah to be the wife of Joseph Payne. Martha (Wright?) was clearly the last wife of Joseph Payne, since she was named as his wife still living in his will. Joseph Payne's daughter, Martha Rowland, lists her birth as 1772 in the 1850 census. If Joseph's supposed first wife was a Hannah Wilson born in 1769, there would be no time for Martha Payne Rowland to be born in 1772. An infant giving birth to a baby???? Also Martha Payne Rowland's first child, was born between 1790 and 1794. If indeed Joseph was really married to a Hannah Wilson as his first marriage, it would make more sense that she was not the daughter of Aquilla Wilson of MD, or that her 1769 birth is wrong, and that she was rather the one reported in unsourced internet genealogies as born in abt 1737 in PA of unknown(?) parents. So, is there a Quaker record in PA of a marriage to Hannah Wilson? Are her parents known? Were Hannah and Joseph divorced? Joseph Payne's will names none of the supposed 3 children by the supposed first wife, but names all the children by the 2nd(?) wife. I also need the record of the marriage to Martha. With all the conflicting unsourced genealogies confusing this, I am hoping for real records cited. Any help would be appreciated. Notify Administrator about this message?
