Payne, Hughes, Jones in Young Cane, Union Co., Ga.

Hello,

I’m looking for descendants of Moses Payne of Young Cane, Union County, Georgia and Goodman Payne of Tennessee who might want to talk about their Payne families.

I noticed some old messages about Moses Payne on this website (b. Rutherford Co., NC, 1806—moved to Georgia about 1840). The messages mention that he is buried in the Jones Family Cemetery in the Young Cane area of Union Co., Georgia (not far from Blairsville) and that he lived on nearby “Payne Mountain.”

I am descended from Goodman Hughes and his wife Eleanor (Jones?) (Payne?). I don’t know anything more about Goodman or Eleanor’s parents, but Eleanor is thought to have been born about 1785. We do think that Goodman Hughes may have been from western SC as there is a man with that name living there in the late 1700s. That Goodman is too old to be the one who married Eleanor Payne?, but perhaps he is our Goodman’s father or uncle.

Here is what is interesting. Goodman and Eleanor’s great-granddaughter, Ada Hughes (my great-grandmother), was born in Young Cane, Union County, Georgia, almost within sight of the Jones Family cemetery, where Moses Payne is supposed to be buried. Ada’s grandparents, Wilson and Ellender Jones, are buried in that same cemetery.

Surely finding Paynes, Hugheses and Joneses together in Young Cane Georgia at the foot of “Payne Mountain” is not just a coincidence?

I have noticed other postings on this board talking about Goodman Payne. Although he died as a fairly young man, Goodman Hughes was a respected Methodist minister. Maybe this name came from Eleanor’s husband and was passed down in the Payne family to a nephew or grand-nephew.

If there is anyone who wants to discuss these families, please write back. Maybe we can help each other discover our elusive Payne connections.

Thank you.
