Found more info that is adding to the confusion

LDS has 2 sets of records that seem to be connected to Jane:

1. Birth: 16/7/1818 Jean Pagon, Lyne + Megget. Parents William Pagon and Anne Paterson

2. Jane Pagan, born Lyne 1819. Parents Walter Pagan and Jane Paterson. Jane Pagan married James Howden 1842, Otago, NZ.

So it seems that 2 brothers, William and Walter Pagan, married 2 sisters, Anne and Jane Paterson, and both had children with similar or identical names.

On the face of it No. 2 is my direct ancestor, but I now know that she was living in Scotland in 1841. She is still there is 1851 and all of their children were born in Scotland according to census data, including one in 1841/2.

In 1841 she was living with her husband James and their 1st child Anne, along with William Pagum, age 45, Walter Pagum, age 20 and Marion Pagum, age 10.

So it would seem that William is most likely to be her father (unless she's living with her uncle and cousins). According to the 1841 census he was born in Ireland.
I also found a birth certificate for Walter Pagan whose parents were William Pagan and Anne Paterson.

But it still leaves the confusion of how someone has a marriage record for Jane Pagan and James Howden in New Zealand!?

Can anyone shed any light on all this?
