I don't have any of the names mentioned in the first post, sorry, but I found what appears to be a record for my ggg-grandmother Jane Pagan on the lds website which says that she married James Howden in Oamaru, Otago in 1842. I thought she could be linked to those you're researching. Her parents are given as Walter Pagan (born c.1795) and Jane Paterson (born c.1798) both in Peebles, Scotland. They married in Lyne, Peeblesshire in 1816. I can't find any records to confirm this on scotlands's people. I had found Jane and James Howden on the Scottish census in 1861. There it says Jane was born in Lyne, Peebleshire. All of their 7 children are recorded as having been born in East Lothian, Scotland. James died in Berwick in 1878 and Jane is on the 1881 census with her daughter in Inveresk. My gg-grandfather Peter remained in Edinburgh and his line continued in Scotland. I can't find a marriage certificate for Jane and James in the Scottish records which would seem to back up the marriage being in Otago. But it would mean that they returned to Scotland pretty quickly, between 1842 and 1848 when their child was born in Scotland according to the 1861 census. I also can't find a death certificate for Jane in Scotland and was already considering the idea that she emigrated before finding the lds record. Perhaps she returned to relatives who remained in Otago and died there? The date 1842 seems unusual - the Otago settlement was only founded in 1842 and the first emigrants brought there was in 1848, so if true it would mean they were some of the first Scots there, and had originally emigrated somewhere else in NZ. I also can't find any references to Pagans (or Howdens) in the passenger lists online. Does anyone think they can help? I'm sorry for rambling a bit, this is all a bit confusing, and this is my first foray into emigration and New Zealand records! Notify Administrator about this message?
