French Soldier History

My ancestor, Paul Defee, was born in France in 1767 (Paul's grandfather is Christian Defee)and died of Typhus in Bruckenthal, Galicia, Austria in 1830. Somehow his wife and 3 boys came to Bruckenthal also and are found in the marriage records there. Our family history says Paul Defee was in the Grand Armee that marched to Moscow. Recent additional history says he was in the 2nd French Army under Marshall Oedinot. How could he and his family have ended up near the present day city of Lviv in the Ukraine?
