I am a descendant of William McMaster and Rachael Patterson who were from Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland. They had 6 children:Helen (b 1819), William (1821-68) married Elizabeth Brown and had a son William, David (b. 1822) John (1824-28) Rachael (1826-1917) and John (b 1828 - named after the first John). Rachael is my 3rd great grandmother. I do not have any information about the boys of this generation but perhaps your James came from this branch. William McMaster the father was a cotton hand loom weaver.
