Mike,

I'm interested in your McMasters research and will be glad to share what I've got. We've run across McMasters in our HADDEN research in southern County Tyrone families. Like you, I also made a research trip to Ireland last year (in September-October 2006) and the findings were wonderful.

James HADDEN (born c. 1809-died 1874) of Dunmacmay townland, Aghaloo parish, Co. Tyrone, married Margaret STEWART (McMASTER?) (born c. 1816-died 1892). They married c. 1840, or before 1841 when their son Samuel was born. We think Samuel was the eldest son and he was named as executor in Margaret Stewart Hadden's 1888 will.

But, there's the birth of a daughter Sarah to "James Hadden & M. McMASTER" of Dunmacmay in 1855.

In the Ballymagrane Presbyterian Church register - Baptisms (Aghaloo parish, Co. Tyrone, Ireland):

6th Jan 1855 - Sarah, dau. of James Hadden & M. McMaster of Dunmacmay.

James Hadden named a daughter Sarah in his 1874 will, and there was only one "James Hadden" that we know was living at Dunmacmay at the time that Sarah Hadden was born in 1855 -- the man who died in 1874 and whose wife was named "Margaret Stewart."

Was Margaret, wife of James Hadden, born a Stewart or a McMaster? Did she have a McMaster husband before she married James Hadden? She was named as "my beloved wife Margaret" in James' 1874 will, and as "Margaret S. Hadden" and "Margaret Stewart Hadden" in her 1888 will and 1892 probate records. She left bequests to children and grandchildren and there is no doubt about her identity in those records.

If James Hadden's wife Margaret Stewart wasn't married previously to a McMASTER, then the 1855 birth of Sarah Hadden must have been to a first wife named "Margaret McMaster," and "Margaret Stewart" was James Hadden's second wife. I don't think this is likely, but we're considering all possibilities!

A "James McMaster" was living at Lairakean, Aghaloo parish, at the time of Griffith's Valuation. Was he a relative of Margaret, wife of James Hadden of Dunmacmay? The other families in Lairakean townland were Irwin, Oliver, White and Wilkins -- the first two, IRWIN & OLIVER, intermarried with Co. Tyrone HADDENS for generations.

James & Margaret's son JOHN HADDEN (who married Susan McMASTER in Boston, Massachusetts in 1883) named a son "Harry/Henry Stewart Hadden." Harry is a nickname for Henry, so Margaret's father may have been a Harry/Henry Stewart. Susan McMaster was born in 1856, the daughter of James & Fanny McMaster of Co. Sligo. Detailed genealogy of these McMASTERS is on the Hartley web site - http://home.comcast.net/~jmhartley/mcmaster/mcmas001.HTM

If you have anything that seems to connect to the McMasters and Haddens of southern County Tyrone, do let me know.

Regards,
Annie Crenshaw
