From Batavia (Illinois ) Herald, 1893 (item is on a scrap of the newspaper so it is not possible to give an exact date but could be 3 March 1893)

School in the Tomle Block
A number of citizens of District No. 6 claim that the Tomle block is not safe and has not been for a long time. Some years go, Mr. Tomle rented his hall to a society of this place for the purposed of holding a ball. A large crowd was in attendance. While dancing one of the center beams split, which caused the floor to settle. The hall was not considered safe for a crowd until repairs were made. I repaired the floor and claim it is very much stronger and safer than when first placed there. Do not take my word for it, but appoint three practical men to examine the building and make a public report of condition of same. I feel that the people are entitled to a guarantee that all is safe.
J.T. McMaster
