More than just tradition. You will find the family listed at 97 Carnan in Bill Lawson's Croft History of South Uist Vol. 2. Donald was of the Hestimul family of MacPhees just across the water from Carnan in the sound between the northern tip of South Uist and Benbecula. Where tradition does come in is that this family is descended from a Spanish sailor shipwrecked in the area and who married a MacPhee and adopted her name. Just a couple of months ago I was talking to one of the descendants at Nunton in Benbecula and he reeled off his patronymic through nine generations, including if my memory is right, Angus and Francis. Certainly there were at least two of the latter name included.
You may struggle with parents for Donald's first wife as she was dead before 1841. It is a pity Marion, who was present in 1841, did not survive to 1855 as her death would be recorded in the statutory register. You might though find this second marriage in the registers at St Michael's RC Church, Ardkenneth. That is where the marriage would have taken place and the registers start in 1829; Mary the last daughter of the first marriage was born in that year, so there is a fair chance of the second marriage being picked up.
Hope this helps.
