Kim: You may already have this information but I will pass it on to you just in case. All is from "A Register of Emigrant Families From the Western Isles of Scotland to the Eastern Townships of Quebec,Canada" by Bill Lawson. For years he operated "Co Leis Thu?" on the Isle of Harris and seems to be the leading researcher on the subject. I believe he is now retired or semi-retired but has still been in contact in the last year or two. At page 47, his #Q255 states: Murdo MacASKILL 1811- son of Alex MacASKILL of Lower Barvas, Lewis, married Margaret MacIVER, 1821-1897, of South Dell, Lewis. Children listed are: Angus b. 1841 John b. 1847 Isabella b. 1848 William b. 1850 Annabella b. 1854 married Malcolm GRAHAM "see Q53" "Columbus" Alex b. 1855 Donald b. 1857 married Margaret MacLEOD "see Q554" Sophia b. 1859 "Murdo MacASKILL came from Lower Barvas, Lewis in 1851 and settled in Lingwick." At pg 14, Q53 lists two Malcolm GRAHAMs, born 1844 and 1850 respectively, with the latter having been the one married to Annabella MacASKILL. There are 10 children in all listed under the name of Murdo GRAHAM, 1801- and wife Catherine MacRITCHIE, daughter of Doanld MacRITCHIE of Melbost Borva. This Murdo is shown as the "son of Malcolm GRAHAM of Borva, Lewis?". It goes on to say that Murdo GRAHAM came from South Galston, Lewis in 1841 and settled in Lingwick. At pg. 100, Q554, it states that this Margaret MacLEOD b. 1849 is the daughter of Angus MacLEOD, b. 1813, and his wife Kirsty CAMPBELL. It further states "It is not known where Angus MacLEOD came from. He settled in Lingwick before 1842". I am sure that you know that this emigration of Islanders started ca 1841 under the auspices of the British-American Land Company, which settled many people in Compton County between 1841 and 1853. It is my understanding that after they were forced off the land during the closures, they mainly became laborers in the kelp gathering industry, and when this fell through they had to emigrate. Hope this helps. See my other postings. Dan Notify Administrator about this message?
