My GGrandmothr was a MacArthur - Mary McIntyre Macarthur (maiden name) who was the neice of Catherine MacArthur who with her husband Angus McInnes settled in Grey Cty - Glenelg Twnp at some time around 1860 1870. Mary's daughter, my grandmother Sarah Crawford Fraser (maiden name) has left a handwritten newspaper account of her own wedding in 1910 to Alexander Hunter. Both had emigrated from Scotland - my Granny just a few months prior to her wedding and my Granddad - 4 year prior. In attendance at her wedding were some cousins from Glenelg - Margaret and Annie McGilvary of Bunessun and Minnie Linn of Owen Sound. In our attempts to confirm that Catherine's father's name was John and to determine the name of his wife (possibly Mary McIntyre, the names of the rest of her siblings other than her brother Donald (my line) and to attempt to go back further it may be that Isabella MacArthur, Catherine MacArthur and Angus McGilvray are all related to my grandmother [Firth/MacArthur Wedding 1880, Grey Cty, Ontario]. We do know that John MacArthur, Catherine's father was likely born in Torosay. The 1841 census lists a John, age 50, Crofter married to Mary age 40 with five children - Catherine age 15, Donald age 10, Mary age 5, Peter age 1 and Samuel age 12. Atthis time the family was living in Achnarrish Hill, Mull. There are two birth records that could possibly be our John McArthur - one in 1800 and one in 1801. The 1841 census is consistent with another birth record - for Donald MacArthur, son of John and Mary MacIntyre - b. Sept. 23, 1830 at Torosay. Family history says that John visited Canada at age 94, and lived to 104 and that he had four sons Donald, John Peter and Samuel. I have not found any record of John. At the time of his death he was living at Berwood Square, Lesmahagow, Scotland. Appreciate any additional information on this family of MacArthurs and any of their kin who also settled in the Glenelg area. Notify Administrator about this message?
