MAAG to MOAK: A Journey from Switzerland to New York by Michael Moak and Steve LappMOAK has been a prominent and documented family in New York's Mohawk Valley since early colonial days. In 1986 William V.H. Barker wrote about these MOAKs in his book "Early Families of Herkimer County, New York". His treatise appears on page 186: "6401: Johannes MOAK - probably born in Switzerland about 1700 to 1710; died about 1800. His wifw died at sea coming to America, as seen in Brown's Folts book page 2. He settled in Bethlehem, NY about 1750. Presumably the Johannes Moak who immigrated from Switzerland was the ancestor to wives of the Rasbachs at German Flats and was the same as the John Moak of Switzerland who was father of Jacob and was said to have come to Bethlehem NY about 1750 (see American Ancestry vol. 1 page 55). Children: 6402: (probably son of Johannes) JACOB MOAK b. say 1724; md. 2nd 1761 to Katherine Claus. 6403: BONOCRATIUS (Crotsy) MOAK b. about 1726, d. about 1814; md. Anna Conrad. 6404: SOPHRONIA (Veronica) MOAK b. 1732, d. 1814; md. Lt. Marks Raspach." The author continues with a history of JACOB, with descendants, and of CROTSY, with his descendants. Please refer to his book for these lines. Also see 'Jacob Moak of New Scotland and his Descendants, 1720 to 1991' , by Martha Slingerland and Grace Moak. Michael W. Moak, subscriber to Mock Family Historian, is descended from the above Jacob MOAK. Steve Lapp, charter member of MFH , has just recently discovered that Sophronia MOAK is his direct ancestor. We (Michael and Steve) do not believe that Jacob MOAK is a son of the above Johannes MOAK. This is confirmed by Michael MOAK's ongoing research into the Swiss church records from Canton Zürich in the early 1700's. ======================================================================= From the LDS Film #0996819 "Kirchenbuch, Evangelisch-Reformertie Kirche, Bülach (Zürich)": [As transcribed by Michael MOAK] Marriage: 19 Feb 1726 Johannes Mag and Barbara Mag Bachenbülach both from Bachenbülach Baptism dates: Children: Sponsors: 16 Feb 1727 Hans Mag Anna Jacob Meÿer Bachenbülach Barbara Maag Anna Frölich 13 Jun 1728 Hanß Maag Pangratz Pangratz Brunner Bachenbülach Barbara Maag Catharina Straßer 13 Dec 1729 Hanß Maag Anna Johannes Mejer Bachenbülach Barbara Maag Anna Frölich 15 Jul 1731 Hs Maag Veronica Hs Jacob Winkler Bachenbülach Barbara Maag Veronica Mejer 5 Mar 1733 Hanß Maag Veronica Hs Jacob Winkler Bachenbülach Barbara Maag Veronica Mejer 2 Oct 1735 Johannes Maag Ragula H Heinrich Maag Bachenbülach Barbara Maag Ragula Zander Deaths: 18 Jul 1728 Anna Maag, Hans Maag's daughter, 1 year 5 m. old 1 May 1732 Veronica Maag, Hans Maag's daughter, 9 m. old 20 Oct 1735 Ragula Maag, Johannes Maag's daughter, 18 d. old [That is all I have right now on the Swiss end of this family - Mike.] =================================================== From "Lists of Swiss Emigrants in the Eighteenth Century to the American Colonies, Volume I; Zurich, 1734-1744" by Albert Benhardt Faust. Total for Bachenbulach 35 souls. ====================================================== On Feb. 7th, 1739 (new style calendar), the Ship Jamaica Galley qualified for admission to the port of Philadelphia in America. Aboard that Ship were many immigrants from Zürich, Switzerland, including one Hans Moogh, age 38. Only male adults appear on the lists for this ship - no women or children. ====================================================== The above evidence clearly indicates that Johannes and Barbara Maag of Bachenbülach left Switzerland in 1738 and sailed to America, probably aboard the Jamaica Galley. They settled in the Mohawk Valley of New York, where their surname was Anglicized to MOAK. It is probable that Rudolph MAAG also came to America from Switzerland about the same time as Johannes MAAG and wife Barbara. Someday we may discover if and how they are all related........way back then. Steve owes the new discovery of his MOAK ancestry to Stephen Ray of Michigan, who published his genealogy, including MOAK, in Broderbund Co.'s "World Family Tree". Michael Moak is continuing his transcription and study of the Bachenbülach church records. Hopefully we will soon know exactly if and how Michael's ancestor Jacob MOAK relates to Steve's ancestor Johannes MOAK.
