William, We may have a connection. My Great Grandmother Mary Catherine Leary is from Rathvilly, Co Carlow. She married my Great Grandfather Michael Flynn who was born in Co Wicklow in 1821. I don't have a birthdate for Mary, but have found a Mary Leary baptised on January 9, 1831 in St. Patrick's Parish records in Rathvilly. Michael and Mary emigrated in 1849, lived in Red Mills, New York for a few years--then homesteaded in Scott County, Iowa where they are buried in St. Anne's Cemetery near Long Grove. I don't really have any other details of their Carlow/Wicklow beginnings. I have a hand-written letter of introduction from St. Patrick's Parish priest dated 1849--so I am sure they are from that immediate area. Rathvilly is relatively close to Hacketstown and other small villages. I have a point of contact in Rathvilly: Patricia Leonard, The Gables, Bough, Rathvilly, Co Carlow. She is housekeeper and administrative assistant at St. Patrick's. Last year she sent me some information on Learys near Rathvilly and I include that here: Michael of James Leary and Mary Nolan, Rathmore. Born on 25th January, 1822. Sponsors-Frank Foley and Ann Kilfoil. Please note that Nolan may include a W as in Nowlan but as far as our records show they appear to be the same family. Ann of James Leary and Mary Nolan, Lisnava. Born on 13th April, 1823. Sponsors-James Deering and Mary Leary. John of James Leary and Mary Nolan, Rathvilly. Born on 4th August, 1828. Sponsors-John Leary and Anna Anderson. Mary of James Leary and Mary Nowlan, Rathvilly. Born on 9th January, 1831. Sponsors-Matt Coogan and Margo Byrne. John Leary and Pat Leary were possible brothers of James Leary. John and Pat have addresses of Ballyoliver and Ballybit-other local areas. I can't trace for certain because the records before 1800 are badly written and faded. There is also a possible sister of James. Her name being Catherine and she lived in Ballybit and was born on 27th October, 1800. Her parents names were Michael and Anna. I don't see a direct relationship here, but they undoubtedly are related due to the close proximity. My wife and I visited Ireland in general and Rathvilly in particular in 1997 and found the Irish to wonderful hosts in a beautiful country. Let me know what you think about the above information. Slainte(To your health in Irish)! Tom
