Ms. Roberson: I saw your postings on the LaForce Genealogy Forum and thought that you might be able to help me with the historical program we are presenting in the central Illinois town of Oakland next September. We are doing a living history and theatrical presentation about the Matson Slave Trial of 1847 in which Abraham Lincoln represented a Kentucky slave owner who lived in Illinois with his slaves. The slave owner was Robert Matson of Bourbon County Kentucky. Another person involved in the story is his housekeeper/mistress, a Mary Ann Corbin. There is a chance that Mary Ann was born a LaForce and married Isaac Corbin in Shelby County, IL in 1842. They were divorced in 1847 because Mary Ann deserted the marriage in 1845, which is probably when she took up with Matson. Mary Ann married Matson in Gallatin County, Illinois in 1848. The newly weds moved to Fulton County Kentucky where Mary Ann died in 1873 at the age of 62, however, her obituary said that she was born on May 4, 1821 in Virginia. All the census records that we have found her in (1850-70) say she was born in Kentucky. We don't know if she met Matson in Illinois or in Kentucky. Matson was a bachelor until they married in 1848 and was known to have mistresses. Mary Ann had four children: Mildred, Henrietta C., Peytonia Virgina, and Harry C.. That is all we currently know about her. Does any of this sound familiar to you? Is there any Mary Ann's unaccounted for in your records of the LaForces? Is there any unknown woman who might fit this time period? Robert Matson and his brothers Enoch and Richard had ties to Pike County MO, too. I believe there is a Fort Matson that was named after Richard. They lived near Palmyra south of Hannibal. Perhaps Matson met Mary Ann there? Thank you in advance for sharing your expertise and your knowledge.
