You might try the local papers of the time of his enlistment, Korean War and 1960 when he got out of the reserves. Back then the newspapers had alot more news items about the people of the area. Who enlisted, when they went or came home on leave, promotions, etc. You just might find a story on the local men who served with mention of units or places fighting.
Try the state Veteran's Affairs Office. He might have applied for state as well as Federal benefits.
