Name change from Kadel to Walker during Civil War.

I am looking for information on a Thomas Walker/Kadel b. 1831 un England. According to my grandmother, who was still pretty sharp at 98, he deserted from the north and changed his name to Walker.
He Married a Sarah J. from Pennsylvania and had to daughters Mary Ann and Ruth Adeline. Ruth is my great grand mother and was born in Kansas. I did find the 1880 census that puts them in Tippercanoe, Indiana.
I am not positive on the spelling of Kadel. This was a subject that was never talked about until right before my grandmothers death in 2007. Any help would really be great.
Thank you.
