James Selby Irby (middle name spelt variously as Selby, Sibley and Sibely) was born in Georgia, in 1837, son of Randall Waddell Irby, and his wife, Elizabeth. He served in company E, 1st Alabama Regiment, during the Civil War, and later came to Australia, where he married Jane Seward in Melbourne, in 1875. They had several children, before James died at Daylesford, in Victoria, in 1909. He may have left his wife and children, as he died on his own at Daylesford, while the rest of the family remained back in Melbourne, or he may have gone to Daylesford as a miner, leaving his family back home. At any rate, the only information shown in the death certficate that corresponds with other details in his marriage certificate, was his age and place of birth in the United States. All other details about family are shown as "Unknown."
Does anyone have any other details about his life in the United States. He is shown in the 1860 United States census records, but is no longer on subsequent U.S. census records, obviously because he had moved to Australia. Unfortunately there is no death notice or obituary in the Daylesford newspapers, so very little is known about his life in Australia, either.
