GRANDMOTHER:
Jane McDonald Milne INGLIS b: 2 Sep 1899 in Leith; m: 14 Feb 1923 Kinnairds Hall, Leith to Alfred Donald SHEWAN; d: 2 Oct 1925 in Montreal, Quebec
Child: Robert Donald SHEWAN [mother died in childbirth]
Jane was a 23 year-old spinster, working as a clerk and living at 71 North Fort Street Leith when she married Alfred Donald Shewan. She immigrated to Canada between 1923 and 1925 where she died shortly after birth of son, Robert Donald.
Ethel Inglis witnessed Jane's marriage. She also lived at 71 North Fort Street. Could have been either a sister or an aunt.
The 1881 Census lists only one Ethel INGLIS. She was living at 14 Millerfield Place in Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Scotland [GRO Vol 685-5 EnumDist 101 Pg 2] in the home of Margaret CALLENDER, unwed, age 40 from Glasgow. Also residing there were: Margaret's nephew, Fergus David FERGUSON, 20 b: Calcutta, India, a Bank Accountant; her niece, Mary Ann C. FERGUSON, 15 b: Auchterarder, Perth, Scotland; boarders Ethel Margt. INGLIS, 10 b: Edzell, Forfar, Scotland; Frances Helen L. INGLIS, 4 from Edinburgh; Chas. Elliot INGLIS 2 b: Calcutta, India; along with a cook, a nurse and a housemaid.

According to the IGI, Ethel Margaret INGLIS was born 10 Sep 1870 in Edzell, Angus, Scotland to Alexander Brand INGLIS & Jessie Ann INGLIS [batch 112853].

IGI lists two Alexander BRANDs the one born in 1839 is the most likely as the second was born after Ethel Margaret's birth.

BACK TO MY FAMILY: GREAT-GRANDPARENTS:

The 1901 Census for the Civil Parish of Leith, Ecclesiatical Parish of St. Cuthbert's includes a record for Charles Inglis, 24, a butcher born in Leith; his 23-year-old wife, Margaret from Edinburgh and one-year-old daughter, Jane born in Leith living at 44 West Bowling Green Street. The building consisted of 5 homes including that of George Inglis, 34 and his wife Jemima 33 along with their children: Alexander, Elizabeth, George and James. This was likely Charles' brother George -- born in 1866.
According to marriage records for Charles Robertson Inglis' daughter Jane, in 1923 he was a butcher's manager. IGI lists no marriage for any Charles Inglis between 1874 - 1914 in Midlothian

In 1881, the INGLIS family were living at 15 Hillhouse Field Or Trafalgar Lane, North Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland (EnumDist 21 Page 4). Alexander INGLIS, aged 44, born in Prestonpans, Haddington, [East Lothian] Scotland was the household head. He worked as a skinner. His wife Jane INGLIS, aged 40, was also born in Prestonpans, Haddington, Scotland. Their 18 year-old daughter Margaret was a domestic servant. She was born in the City of Edinburgh. All of the other children were born in North Leith. They were: William INGLIS, 16 an apprentice skinner, George 14, an apprentice joiner, Alexander 12, Agnes 9, Charles 6, Peter 4 and Alice 1.
By the time of the 1891 Census, County of Midlothian, District of Leith South, the INGLIS household was comprised of Alexander, 55; his wife Jane 50 and their four children: Alexander 22, Agnes 19, Charles 17 and Peter 14. The three older children: Margaret, William and George were no longer with their parents. Alice, who would have been 11, must have either died or been with relatives.
