Rowland HORSLEY (I) was born about 1640 in Virginia.2 He resided in 1704 in New Kent County, Virginia.8 He had 300 acres of land on that year's rent rolls. He may have been the son of the Robert HORSLEY whose died intestate in York County before March 1646/47. Robert's administrators were Capt. Joseph JOHNSON and Edward PRINCE. He was also probably related to the Ralph HORSLEY who led a group of religious dissenters (Baptists?) into Maryland in about 1670. Ralph HORSLEY witnessed a deed in Charles River County in April 1640. In Northumberland County, VA in 1652 he rec'd headright land on Potomack Creek at Chickacome River adj. Henry REYNER for the transportation of Jane and Joseph HORSLEY and Robert SHARPE Also a Stephen HORSLEY and Nicholas WADDELOW had a patent for 400 acres in Northampton Co., VA in 1647. This is no doubt the same man (spelled HORSEY) who created such a disruption in the Northampton Court in 1653 regarding Walter CHILES' ship which had been seized by one of Cromwell's men. Robert Lancaster and Rowland Horsley had a joint land grant in New Kent County for 473 acres on Mattadequon Creek, dated 8 Oct 1672. To all & c. whereas &c. Eliz Sutton Jno Sutton Wm Wood Giles West Richard Nor__ (Virginia Land Patents Book 6 page 588) This Robert Lancaster was a sea-faring man who made his will on 3 Jan 1684 aboard the ship "Unicorn". His legatees were his wife Ann; widowed sisters Anne Cooper and Rachel Parret; sister Mary Lewis; brother Edward; cousin Baker; executrix, his mother, Anna Lancaster. The birth of Rowland's slave, Sambo, is recorded in the St. Peter's Parish Register in 1691. He is on a list of tithables the same year, a neighbor of William BASSETT. Since there are no other mentions of Rowland in the Register or the Vestry Book of St. Peter's Parish, it is quite likely that he was a religious dissenter and that is the likely reason for Frances' well-to-do father to leave her only a few shillings. He had 250 acres in New Kent County on the 1704 Quit Rent (tax) Roll. Rowland HORSLEY (I) had the following children: 4 i. Robert HORSLEY. 10. William BASSETT was born about 1646 in York County, Virginia.5 He was minor when his father died. York County, Virginia Records 1665-1672 abstracted 7 Compiled by Benjamin B. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 15th day of October, 1720. /s/ Will Bassett Sealed before us: Elmore Gerrard In 1722, he was one of three executors to the will of Governor Berkeley. He was married to Anne __?__ about 1665 in York County, Virginia.5 William and Anne were, for a time, step-brother and sister. 11. Anne __?__ was born about 1645 in York County, Virginia.5 I have not personally proven that her maiden name is Underhill nor that she was the daughter of John. This is "family tradtion" and should be treated as suspect until more research is done. She is said to have been a step-sister of William. If that is true, she was probably the daughter of Isaac Clopton. Capt. John Underhill left a will and she was not mentioned in it. William BASSETT and Anne __?__ had the following children: i. Thomas BASSETT5 was born about 1665 in York County, Virginia.5 He died on 20 Apr 1720 in New Kent County, Virginia.10 Thomas predeceased his father. His lineage is proven by the fact that William left a substantial portion of his estate to Thomas, Jr. ii. John BASSETT was born about 1668 in York County, Virginia.5 John sold the land which his father gave him to William Clopton. This land lay along the upper side of Black Creek. It is probable that some of his estate lay within Hanover County for he had some of his children appear in the Records of St. Paul's Parish. and some of his children were registered in St. Peter's Parish. iii. Ursula BASSETT5 was born about 1673 in York County, Virginia.5 iv. Mary BASSETT5 was born about 1675 in New Kent County, Virginia.5 v. Elizabeth BASSETT5 was born about 1678 in New Kent County, Virginia.5 vi. Anne BASSETT5 was born about 1682 in York County, Virginia.5 5 vii. Frances BASSETT. FIFTH GENERATION 20. Thomas BASSETT was born in 1617 in England.5 He immigrated in 1635 to from England to Barbados..5 Thomas, age 18, sailed from England in "Truelove" June 10 1635, to land in Bermuda or Somer-Islands. He died about 1655 in York County, Virginia.11 His son, William, was under 18. On 22 Mar 1624: The Record of the Virginia Company of London note that: Wm Bassett was one of the massacred by the savages of Virginia. Notice to be given to his family in England, "to the end that Heyres(Heirs) may take heed for the property: College People (about 2 miles from Henry City, Va.) Copy filed under Va Prob. or Land and Prop. 1639 Apr 18: Thomas received 150 acres bounding E & W on Chickahominy N to Stopcock, Virginia (taken into New Kent County in 1654) He was married to Mary FELGATE (I) about 1642 in York County, Virginia.5 21. Mary __?__ was born about 1622 in probably England.12 She died in Jan 1678 in York County, Virginia.5 On 24 Sep 1655 in York County, Virginia, she filed a claim for - and was granted - the entire estate of Robert Felgate as his only heir. Her surety was Capt. William Barber. Thomas BASSETT and Mary FELGATE (I) had the following children: i. Mary BASSETT was born about 1644. 10 ii. William BASSETT. SOURCES 1.
