I am hoping for a clue or some help. One of my ancestors was Whaley Jonas Bryant b. abt 1837 in Tennessee, probably Smith County. He was in the 1870 and 1880 census in Monroe County, Kentucky. I believe his father to be R. G. Bryant/Briant (first name possibly Rhoadhaven or George) b. abt 1799 in Virginia and mother a Stewart/Steward/Stuart also born in Virginia. I believe his grandparents to be Jesse Bryant and Mary Hill Nelson Bryant b. abt 1780 in Virginia.
I found Whaley in the 1850 Macon County, Tennessee census:
12 855 Briant R.G. 51 M Farmer 1200 VA
12 855 Briant Molly 70 F VA
12 855 Briant Sanford 14 M TN
12 855 Briant Darthula 13 F TN (Family tradition gives me a Dorothy G. , but no Darthula.)
12 855 Briant Whaley 11 M TN ?
12 855 Briant Andrew 10 M TN
12 855 Briant Marilda 9 F TN
12 855 Briant Ann 8 F TN (Family tradition says her first name was Pomeroy.)
12 855 Briant Wilmouth 7 F TN
The only other information I have on this family is from an article submitted by Carol Coker in the book Macon County, Tennessee History & Families:
"Allen Bradford Bryant was born 1803 in Halifax, VA. He was the son of Jessie Bryant and Mary Hill Nelson. Jessie was a Revolutionary soldier in VA. He signed an oath dated 30 Apr 1778 in Virginia. Allen kept the certificate in the family and his son C.W. Bryant had the oath notarized by a judge in Franklin, KY as being an original signed oath. It is now located at the Historical Society in Simpson Co., KY. Jessie Bryant's children were listed in his son's will. Edmond F. Bryant's will in 1841 in Anderson Co., KY. His siblings were: Eli, Jesse, George, Rhoadhaven, the heirs of David, Allen, Polly, Nancy, Sally (Keeling), Elizabeth (Gully) and Martha Maram (Stewart)."
In 1840 Edmund and Allen Bryant were listed in Smith Co., TN. Allen Bryant was in Sumner Co., TN for 1850 and in 1857 he moved his family to Franklin, Simpson County, KY.
I'm assuming the above names (Keeling), (Gully) & (Stewart) are married names! So the children of Jessie & Mary Hill Nelson Bryant:
Allen Bradford b. 1803
David (heirs of)
Martha Maram (Stewart)
Whaley is not a usual given name so I feel it must be a surname somewhere in the family line. Do any of these names repeat in anyone's Whaley family research? Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you for any help you may be able to give.
