Sophia Groscost was a daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Bowser Groscost. Elizabeth was a daughter of Samuel Bowser and ??? of Adams County (Samuel elder). From what Ken Groscost (another poster on this board) has shared with me, this Daniel was a wagonmaker and probably born about mid 1750s to mid 1760s, more likely the latter. Ken Groscost believes he was the son of Philip Daniel Groscost based on tax lists and other primary/secondary source material.
The working theory is that after first wife Elizabeth Bowser Groscost died, Daniel Groscost married Christina or Christiana Decker in 1814. They had five children: Daniel, Barbara, Leah, Susanna and Levi. Daniel Groscost then died about 1822. I believe I found the family in 1820 census of Hamilton Twp, Adams County, p 36, just above the entry for Samuel Bowser. Heritagequest.com indexed this record as Daniel Gro???. The age recorded, however, would correspond to a 1775 birthdate at earliest.
Percy Deckard's Genealogy of the Deckard Family... copyright 1932, attributes Christiana to Frederick and Barbara Moore Decker; thus she would have been a sister of John Decker, Sophia's husband. However, the genealogy mentions that Christina or Christiana married a Christian Groscost and had only four children.
See also my previous posts on Genealogy's Bowser board and Bowser list at rootsweb regarding the parents of Sophia, Jesse and Eliza Groscost. This information was taken from a notice about the settlement of Samuel Bowser's estate published in the Adams Sentinel in 1829.
In conclusion, all of this is a working theory until I have the opportunity to research land and other records. You may want to contact other Groscost researchers who have made more progress with this line.
