My mothers maiden name was Curley, she came from near Athlone, 4 miles west of Athlone in County Roscommon, in the townsland of Bealnamulla. Her fathers name was James Curley. I dont know of any other families of that name in that locality, my mother and all of her siblings are now deceased.
Athlone is devided geographically by the river Shannon, half in Co. Westmeath and half in Co. Roscommon, however, for administration purposes it is listed at being in Co. Westmeath, a fact that might mislead researchers living abroad.
My mother only ever mentioned a cousin with the name Curley who resided on the Athlone Road near Ballinasloe, more than likely he is now deceased. In my grandparents time Bealnamulla was in the parish of Drum, you could enquire there about parish records. Curley is not a common name and is associated with more with south Co. Roscommon that with Co. Westmeath. Good luck with your search.
Teh early morning news on the radio this morning mentioned a murder case in Galway which was under the supervision of a Superintendent Curley of the Garda Siochana (ie Police). You might be related!
