Dear Jane,
Are you aware that images of Missouri death certificates 1910-1958 are online at http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates
I found a Leo CRIST born May 23, 1883 in Akron, Ohio with father John, mother unknown, who died in Waynesville General Hospital on December 19, 1948. I know the dates are somewhat off from what you mentioned, but perhaps you'd want to check it out and see if the informant and other information might match what you know. Or maybe I misunderstood and he moved to California and if he may have died in that state, I believe there are also records for that state online and a death record could give the parents' names.
