Conger Family Genealogy Forum

My family lore traces our Conger origins as Huguenots from the Alsace region of France, back when it was a part of Germany, with the family name originally being “Koeniger” and ultimately evolved to “Conger”.
Substantial evidence corroborates the Alsatian stories. However, other research traces the family line back to “John Belkunker”, b: 1425 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. Belkunker’s father is reported as being John BELCOMBRE, born 1390 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. This would predate the Huguenots by over 100 years.
The different conflicting information all does affirm that the Belconger family was associated with St. Peter’s Church in Norwich, England that had a history of tolerating religious dissenters back to the 1300’s.
In all likelihood, the truth is probably that histories of both the paternal and maternal lines have been mixed together.
