Not my Collins line, but here's what I find on a quick look-up on George William Collins. Briefly I find this: George William Collins, born April 1872 (or 1874) in Illinois. WIFE # 1: Alice M. (born March 1878 in Illinois) CHILDREN: (3 sons) Roy R. (born June 1896) Milford (born Nov. 1894) Glen (born Dec. 1900) (I find no record of Roy, Milford or Glen after the 1900 census) WIFE # 2: Mary (born May 1880 in Illinois) CHILDREN: Mary's children: James A. DOWNING (born May 1898) Mary E. DOWNING (born about 1901) An unknown child (born and died between 1900 and 1908) William and Mary's children: Daisy J. COLLINS (born about 1909) Paul W. COLLINS (born about 1914) ==================== I find him first in the 1930 Census. He is living in the same household as his daughter Daisy (married to Elbert Chase). ============= 1930 Census: Illinois, Champaign County, Ludlow Township (Part of Rantoul Village) (115 West Campbell Ave) Chase, Elbert 26 Blacksmith ----Daisy 20 ----Everett G. 6 Collins, William 55 Laborer / Odd Jobs ----Mary 47 ----Paul W. 16 Daisy was age 17 when she married Elbert. They have one child Everett G. William was age 33 when he married Mary who was age 25. =================== Working back, in 1920 William is listed as "William M." but it is obvious that we have the same household: 1920 Census: Illinois, Champaign County, Ludlow Township (Part of Village of Rantoul) Collins, William M. 48 Laborer / Brickyard ----Mary 37 ----Daisy J. 10 ----Paul 6 ============================ In the 1910 census, we find George W. and Marry C. household which includes Daisy J. (11 months old) and Mary's two children from her marriage to Downing. . It is the second marriage for both George and Mary. They have been married for 3 years. Mary has born 4 children, of which 3 are still living. So either she and George W. have lost a child, or one of her Downing children died between 1900 and 1908 Since James and Mary Downing are listed as stepchildren to George, it's obvious that they were not put up for adoption before the marriage. 1910 Census: Illinois, Champaign County, Rantoul Village (Sangamon Ave.) Collins, George W. 37 Laborer / Brick T****er ----Marry C. 27 ----Daisy J. 11 mos Downing, James A. Stepson 12 ----Marry E. Stepdgtr 9 =================== ================ The 1900 census gives a good bit of information. By the way, in 1900 Mary Downing is found up in Vermillion County with her husband "D. A. Downing" and her son James. They have been married for four years George William Collins and wife Alice M. are found in Champaign County, Rantoul Village. William and Alice M. have been married for 4 years. Alice has borne 3 children, all three of whom are still living (which would be their sons Roy, Milford, and Glen). 1900 Census: Illinois, Champaign, Rantoul Village Collins, William (April 1874) age 26 Day labor ----Alice M. (March 1878) age 22 ----Roy R. (June 1896) age 3 ----Milford (Nov 1894) age 2 ----Glen (Dec 1900) age 7mos =============================== The next question working backwards is where would we find George William in the 1880 census (since the 1890 census is lost)? A clue may be the other Collins families living in Rantoul Village in 1900. -------------------- 1900 Census: Illinois, Champaign, Rantoul Village ------------------ Dwelling # 11 Collins, George W.(Dec 1849) age 50 (widowed) House Mover ----Ella M. (March 1880) age 20 ----Otis E. (Dec 1886) age 13 ---Hyde (female) (March 1878) age 22 Collins, Isaac (Boarder) (Sept 1856) age 53 (widowed) -------------------- Dwelling # 162 Thompson, Theodore B. ----Bessie M. (Dec. 1874) age 25 ----(2 children) ----Collins, Mary E. (Mother-in-law) (June 1841)age 58 (widowed) --------------------- I think that George W. (born 1849, Illinois) is George William's father and that Mary E. Collins (mother-in-law to Theodore Thompson is his mother. These two people are listed as "widowed" but I suspect that is simply to cover up that they are estranged from each other. In the census record for the Thompson household it actually states that Mary E. Collins is "on extended visit." One other note: ELLA M. Collins is listed in the census as born "March 1880" in "Missouri." ===================== Tracking these people back to 1880, we find them in Missouri as follows: 1880 Census: Missouri, Carroll County, Morris Township Collins, G. W. age 30 Farmer ----Mary E. age 20 ----William G. age 8 ----Emma E. age 5 ----Pheba E. age 2 ----Ella M. age 3 mos All members of the household are listed as born in "ILLINOIS" except for Ella M. who is born in "MISSOURI" So apparently the household after moving from Illinois between 1878 and 1880 then moved back to Illinois by 1900. The son WILLIAM G. would fit as your George William, born about 1872 in Illinois. ============== But I have had no success finding these people in the 1870 census. If your George William was born in Bement (Piatt County) about 1872, then that would be the first place to look. But I only find an Albert and a John Collins (with no families) there in 1870. The George W. (born 1849, Illinois) who is living in Rantoul Village in 1900 is listed in the census records as his parents were both born in Ohio. In the 1860 census there is a Jacob and Susan Collins found in Piatt County, both born in Ohio. But can not find this household in 1870, unless it is Susan Collins in Champaign County. In her household is a George W. Collins born 1858, meaning he would be only age 14 when your George William was born in 1872. So nothing seems to fit in 1870. Still I hope this information is helpful. There were several Collins families that migrated from North Carolina and Virginia into Piatt and Champaign counties around 1850. It would be of interest to me if it turns out that your George William was connected to one of those. Good luck. Notify Administrator about this message?
