Hello,
The only Hugh Coffin mentioned in the entire Louis Coffin book died in 1861 so I don't know if this the one you are looking for or not. If he was a Civil War veteran, he must have died the year he enlisted (1861).
Anyway, this Hugh Martin COFFIN was born Aug. 7, 1840 and died Dec. 5, 1861. He was a son of James Ayer COFFIN of Monroe Co., TN and his wife Margaret MARTIN daughter of Hugh and Sarah. James and Margaret were married Aug. 12, 1834.
James was born 1806 and d. 1871, Margaret was born 1813 and d. 1865.
James was a son of Charles COFFIN and Susanna.

Other children of James and Margaret were:
Susan Eliza of Sweetwater, TN b. 1842
Sarah Martin b. 1846
Margaret McKinney b. 1848 who m. John H. INMAN in 1870
Nannie b. 1850 and died June 1879.Mary Ella b. 1853
and Julia Ayer COFFIN b. 1856 who married James W. HARLE in 1878.

Now, James Coffin's parents again were Charles Coffin, D. D. (it says) and Susanna Woodbridge AYER and they married in 1802. Charles was born in Newburypot, MA on Aug. 15, 1775 and died June 3, 1853. He moved to Greenville, Tennessee. Susanna was born 1779 and died July 1864.
They had several children.

Charles parents were Dr. Charles Coffin and Hephzibah CAMES.
Charles Coffin (Dr.) was born 1741 d. 1821, Hephzibah Cames was b. ? and d.? She is only listed as being "of Boston". They had 5 children, at least that is what is listed.
Charles may have been a Minister and not a Medical doctor because his brother is /was the very famous Rev. Paul Coffin of Buxton, York Co., Maine (see my message that I posted here a few months ago about the Rev. Paul Coffin...do a Search and his name should come up).

Charles was a son of Joseph Coffin and Margaret MORSE.
Joseph was born 1702 d. 1773. Margaret b. ? d.? They were married in 1725 and had at least 8 children. One of them was Sarah Coffin who married the Rev. Daniel LITTLE of Wells, ME in 1759, and of course the Rev. Paul Coffin who graduated from Harvard in 1759 and married Mary GORHAM of Charlestown, MA in 1763.

Joseph was a son of Nathaniel Coffin and Sarah DOLE.
and Nathaniel Coffin was son of Tristram Coffin the 2nd and Judith Somerby and he of course was son of Tristram 1 Coffin the immigrant and his wife Dionis STEVENS.

I hope this is the right Hugh Coffin that you are looking for. If not perhaps it will help someone else.
Maybe by now you have found your link.
