This is John Green(6) Chamberlin, my ancestor. I have more detailed information here about him, including a reference in my research notes to the particular lease record that you cited (but not the January 1866 release you cited, which was long after his death). John was born, 8 Sep 1779, Thetford, Orange Co., Vermont, and died, 1 May 1845, Milton Town, Saratoga Co., NY, married 11 Jun 1801, Ballston Spa or Watervliet, Albany Co., NY, to Hepsibah Packard(?) (or perhaps Hunt?), b. 21 Apr 1765 (place unknown), d. 21 Apr 1838, Milton Town, Saratoga Co., NY, with 2 children listed for them, including my great great grandfather, Dr. Joseph Fitch Chamberlain (1804-1890) [graduate of Albany co., NY, Medical College, 1826) & later resident of Kankakee Co., Illinois. The other child (Joseph's sister) remaining unidentified - she evidently died after her marriage, in LeRoy, NY. John & Hepzibah are buried in the West Bloodville cemetery (now called Powell-Wiswell Cemetery), located just west of the city of Ballston Spa - I went there many years ago and was surprised to see the gravestones were well preserved - no other family members are buried there as far as I know. John spelled his surname as Chamberlain or Chamberlin - both ways, and his father & brothers spelled it Chamberlain, but all of his descendants consistently spelled it Chamberlin. John is 1 of 10 children of Benjamin(5) Chamberlain, b. 5 Oct 1742, Hebron, Tolland Co., CT, d. 7 Mar 1810, Thetford, VT & Jerusha Green, b. 5 Aug 1742, Coventry, Tolland Co., CT, d. 16 Apr 1812, Thetford, VT. The ancestral line of descent is: John(4), John(3), Benjamin(2), Richard(1) of Braintree, MA - one of the five well known original Ch'n immigrant ancestors in New England, whose origins in England remain unknown. The 1866 Chamberlain release of a lease to Aaron Phillips you mentioned was perhaps executed by Dr. Joseph F. Chamberlin, who moved with his family from Milton to Yellowhead Twp., Kankakee Co., IL, in 1864 or 1865. Just a guess on my part, based on the dates involved. By the way, I'm an avid Chamberlain genealogist - one of the cofounders of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society in 1996 here in Michigan. You can find thousands of my responses in Ancestry.com and GenForum message boards (Chamberlain, Chamberlin, Chamberland) to queries such as yours. The most avid researcher of this family of John Chamberlain/lin (for several decades by now) is my distant cousin, Roseann Drew Leute - you can find a few of her postings online, too, if you wish. She is continuing, during her retirement years, to attempt to identify/prove Hepsibah's origins and we correspond back and forth about this. We both had our detailed Ch'n lineages formally published in the Chamberlain Chain (now defunct) about 10 years, published by the late Carolyn Weidner of Spokane, Washington - Carolyn's files, including copies of the Chamberlain Chain, are now located in the WCGS archives at the Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Anyway, if you will contact me via Email, I'll be pleased to share with you what I know about John Ch'n and his family. James B. Parker <jbparker@provide.net>.
