As a Chamberlain genealogist, I don't know much about the Lanier family, but I was easily able to learn more in Ancestry.com and in GenForum sites online. For instance, the LDS/Mormon IGI and Ancestral File records online have several listings for this family, tracing the family on back to England. Sampson Lanier, Jr., b. c1712, Brunswick or Surry Co., VA, d. Sept 1757, married Elizabeth Chamberlain in Brunswick Co., VA in 1737, with 8 children listed for them. He was the son of Sampson Lanier Sr., born sometime between 1662 and 1688, of Charles City, Virginia, who married Elizabeth Washington c1703, of Albemarle Parish, Sussex Co., Virginia. Sampson Sr. was a son of John Lanier and Sarah Edmonds. The Lanier ancestral line of descent is listed as: Sampson Jr.(6), Sampson(5), John(4), John(3), Clement(2), Nicholas(1) Lanier.
Regarding Elizabeth Chamberlain, she is fairly well known from her mention in her father's will and from her marriage to Sampson Lanier. She was given 149 acres in her father's will. My research notes state, quoting the Chamberlain genealgist, Philip J. Chamberlain's records: "The birth date of 1710 is a rough estimate [other persons estimate it at 1715]; her death date comes from two different Genserve files, submitted by Chris K. Perry of Dickinson, TX, and Louise Miller of Malakoff, TX. Both these persons give lengthy pedigrees of the Lanier descendants." My own research notes list several queries posted in the Chamberlain Chain and elsewhere since 1986 regarding Elizabeth Chamberlain and her father. Her father, Samuel Chamberlain, was born about 1685 (place not stated), and died, 14 Sep 1752, Brunswick Co., VA. His eldest son William was mentioned in the will, proved 24 Oct 1752, St. Andrew Parish, Brunswick Co., VA (Will Bk III, p. 84) at which time a probate court ordered that "William Chamberlain eldest son and heir at Law of the Testator should be summoned to appear at the next court to be held for the said court and contest the validity thereof if he should think fit." One presumes from the wording that there were younger sons in this family, but their names are unknown. Several possibilities for Samuel's parents have been put forward by different Chamberlain researchers through the years, some of them discounted for various reasons (see Philip J. Chamberlain's 3 Feb 2003 Ancestry.com Chamberlain posting] - thus Samuel's parents and origins remain unknown. Ref. Chamberlain Chain, Vol. 15, p. 19, query by Sarah Browder, citing 1729 & 1731 land records for a Samuel Chamberlain of Hanover and Surry counties, Virginia - probably the Samuel of Brunswick Co. listed here. Here is what she said: "The Surry Co., VA D & W 1730-38 p. 502 mentions Thomas Chamberlayne of Briston (I took to mean ENG.). The D & W 1715-30 p. 983 an indenture 10/10/1729; Richard Ledbetter of Brunswick Co., VA to Samuel Chamberlain of Hanover Co., VA, gent. for Lb. 20 sterling, a tract of land on N. side of Meherrin River in Co. of Surry, 220 acres of land recorded 10/15/1729. I feel sure he is the same due to the location. In Cavaliers and Pioneers, p. 408, a Samuel is listed in Surry rec. 400 acres Prince George Co., VA on both side of Arthur's SW; 17 Sep 1731. I feel this is poss. the father of Elizabeth, but not sure need help!!"
