M       8841       Benjamin5, b. About 1747, probably Mansfield, Windham Co., CT. Married Martha Byram, about 1766, probably Sussex Co., NJ. Died 29 Nov 1816, near Sparta, NJ. +

M       8842       John5, b. About 1749, probably Mansfield, Windham Co., CT. Undoubtedly went to New Jersey with his brother Benjamin before 1760. On 9 July 1833, a John Chamberlain, then a resident of Caswell Co., NC, applied for a pension based on his service during the Revolutionary War. He deposed that he was 86 years old, having been born in 'Windsor County,' New Jersey, 4 Mar 1747; that his father's family register was destroyed by the British during the war. He stated that he was living in Sussex, NJ, in May 1776, when he was drafted into the company of Captain William Carhart in the regiment of Col. Haughton, brigade of General Dickinson.
He went on to say that he served in Elizabeth Town, Springfield, Brunswick, Trenton, and other engagements. Saw the battle of Trenton fought in the night before Christmas and the enemy demoralized through dissipation. He returned home in March 1777, and afterwards removed his family to the County of 'Brunswick,' where his father lived, and there took up his residence. He was drafted again and was in the company of Capt. Titus, Col. Phillip's regiment, Gen. Dickinson's brigade. Was in the battle of Monmouth, 28 June 1778, and other engagements. In 1798, he removed from 'Windsor' County, NJ, to Prince William County, VA, and four years later to Caswell Co., NC. His application was not granted even though a minister and several other people testified as to the trustworthiness of his good character.
There appear to be no clues in this application as to the name of his father, or any other relative, for that matter. He speaks of counties and seems to mean towns in some cases and there may be cause to challenge some parts of the narrative, but it should still held on to for corroborative proof and further information. [A new deposition was supposed to have been filed in his behalf in 1836, but I have no information about it. DCC]
[Compiler's Notes:] It is my opinion that this man was suffering from the infirmities of old age in not being able to recall more details, and for his confusion about county and town names. The signficance of this application is his connection to Sussex Co., NJ, and that he was born in 1747, certainly close enough in age to be a sibling of Benjamin5 who was known to have resided in Sussex County, and also of about the same age. This information coupled with the family tradition that Benjamin had a brother John does carry some significance. The case is by no means 'open and shut,' but it would be well worth someoneís time to check into it further.

F       16147       Dorcas5, b. About 1751 (?), probably Mansfield, Windham Co., CT. Probably a daughter. Married Isaac Decker, Lic. 17 Apr 1769, Sussex Co., NJ.

BIOGRAPHICAL
Benjamin was a young boy when his parents migrated from Reading, MA, to Mansfield, CT, about the year 1730. Later, as a young man, he removed from Mansfield to Sussex County, NJ, probably by 1754. An exhaustive search of all New Jersey records indicates that the Chms living in New Jersey prior to 1750 (at least the southern counties), were with little doubt, all descendants of John2 (Henry1) Chm, whose sons Henry and William came to old Monmouth County in the early 1680s. The Benjamin and Mary of this record, who were living in Sussex County by 1760, had no apparent connection to the other New Jersey Chm families.
The tradition of the descendants of this coupleís son Benjamin5 stated that he had emigrated from Connecticut and was accompanied by a brother John. This tradition has been substantiated by the examination of Connecticut records. Benjamin first appeared in the Willington, CT, land records on 26 Oct 1750, when he purchased land from Moses Royce, Jr. He made several other land transactions in Mansfield from 1751-1752. He is not found in the land records after 19 Feb 1752, which indicates that he probably removed from Mansfield to New Jersey soon afterwards.
In any case, this man's appearance in New Jersey within the right time frame of his previous residence in Connecticut, provides a reasonable basis to make the proposition that the Benjamin of Reading, MA, and Mansfield, CT, and the Benjamin who died in Sussex County, NJ, in 1760 are one and the same. The evidence of his fatherís movements show that the family removed from Reading, MA, to Mansfield, CT, about the year 1728, when Benjamin was a small child.
Little is known of Benjamin's wife Mary. but it seems logical that Benjamin probably met and married her while residing at Mansfield, CT.
An Orrin Chm [LN 9331], grandson of his brother Joseph, was known to have come from Mansfield, CT, and migrated to New Jersey where he settled in Monmouth County in the early to mid 1820s.
Extracts from the New Jersey Archives, Calendar of Wills, Vol. 32, 1751-1760, read:
'1760, Dec 29. Chamberlain, Benjamin, of Newtown, Sussex County, Intestate. Bond of widow, Mary Chamberlain, as Administratix. Japheth Byram, Esq., fellowbondsman, both of Newtown.'
ì1761, Jan. 1. Inventory , £110.13.5, by William Marsh and Isaac Harlow, the Administratix signing as ëMary, wife of Japheth Byram.íî [Liber 10, P. 543]
See also The Index of Wills, Inventories, etc., as referenced.
On 4 June 1796, his heirs (not individually named) shared in the distribution of his motherís estate in Mansfield, CT (Stafford District Probate Court Records, Vol. 4, pp. 263-65).
A preliminary search of the Connecticut land records after 1796 have not revealed any quitclaim or settlement that may have been made by any of the heirs of this man. While all the evidence thus far suggests that this man is indeed the son of Edmund3, positive proof is still lacking.
Glazier theorizes that this couple may have also had a son David, who may have returned to New England, and cites Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution, regarding a David Chamberlain, who served from Oxford, MA, in 1778, but who enlisted at Mansfield, and adds: ìsurely Mansfield, CT, and not Mansfield, MA.î However, this compiler does not see any basis for this speculation.
