My great-great-father was William Chaloner, born about 1824 in Ditton, Kent, UK. He married Anne Beadle on 13 December 1847 in the parish church in Maidstone, Kent. They registered the birth of a son, William Challender as his name appears on the handwritten birth certificate on which William and Ann made their marks. William and Ann Beadle Challender had 8 children , all born in Faversham or Tynham, Kent between September 1869 and October 1882. My father, Valentine Hector Challender, born on 14 Febrauary 1906 (who would have guessed) emigrated to Canada and married my mother in 1939. I've read that the name Chaloner, in its many variations of spelling, is connected to Chalon-sur-Mare in France where fine woolen blankets were woven from British fleece and werer traded through Belgium back to the Brits. The blankets were known as Chaloners to identify their origin. Perhaps people involved in their trade were also known as Chaloners......
