Earliest known – Henry Carse listed as a tenant on the Hamilton Estates (Hanna) previously I believed that Henry lived in Bangor in the north-east of Down but know I have discovered that Hamilton also established at Killyleagh and the nearby Killinchy in the south-east. As the Carses seem to be historically concentrated around Killinchy (townlands of Killinchy, Carrigullen and Balloo) this earliest known Carse probably lived around Killinchy. The Carses appear to have been involved in or supported the rebellion of 1798 evidence A John Carse was married to a Sarah McCann the daughter of the James McCann hanged for his involvement. A John Lowry a member of the United Irishmen was killed in the uprising. John Lowry occurs as forenames in the Carse/McCann families. Mickey McKee reported to me that the present McCanns of Killinchy had said that the Carses were active in the rebellion on the wrong side (ie the United Irishmen) and were burned out after the rebellion and they did not return until 1813. A James Breeze of Killinchy was the leader at the burning of Hugh McKee’s (an informer) house at Saintfield. On the 11 Jun 1798 General Nugent issued a proclamation that if the rebels did not desist from their activities he would “proceed to totally destroy the towns of Killinchy, Killyleagh, Ballynahinch, Saintfield and every cottage and farmhouse in the vicinity of these four places; carry off the stock and cattle and put everyone to the sword who may be found in arms” My current theory is that Carses came from Ayrshire in Scotland under the patronage of Hamilton and settled in the Killinchy/Killyleagh area. They were involved/supported the 1798 rebellion as part of the United Irishmen and after the rebellion was put down a number moved/fled 5 miles north west to the Ballygowan and Comber areas. The small number of Carses in the Belfast Mewtownards areas maybe the result of a general move from the rural areas 1900-1950 This is the picture that is emerging but is not yet supported with hard evidence so I submit it for debate and to set a logical direction for further work.
