John Layton Carlisle 1844-1918 TN/IL/TX

Looking for connections for John Layton Carlisle. The first solid info on him is a 1870 census for Scott County, Illinois. He married Martha Bryant in 1865 in Scott County. He was living with Martha, John Thomas Carlisle = newborn, and Martha's younger siblings (can't find her parents either lol). Martha died and John married again in Jersey County. They had moved to Houston County, Texas by 1880 but the new wife (Ann) had died and he had remarried again! Martha Jane Wright. They moved to Hamilton County, Texas sometime that year with their new twins, but left Martha #1's son, John Thomas Carlisle, in Houston County. He was now 10. John Layton lived out the rest of his life in Hamilton County. He is the only Union soldier buried in Hamilton County. Does anyone have any ideas on how to proceed? Civil war records say they couldn't prove his claim to have served so they denied pension. He said on one census he was from Tennessee and another he said he was from North Carolina. Help
