Notes for NOAH BRUSSO:
--book about him called "Tommy Burns Canada's Unknown World Heaveyweight Champion" by Dan McCaffery, 2000.
--was the 12th of 13th child born to a German-Canadian cabinet make.
Childhood; -had a hard life.
-when was old enoguh to walk, was beaten by his father, strapped by his teachers and challenged to fights by his peers.
-was expected to perform chores from the time he could walk. if he failed to pull his weight, he faced harsh discipline.
-when he was 12, was scheduled to play lacrosse game one fall afternoon when his father ordered him to stay home and
        chop wood instead.
-his boyhood was haunted by a nagging fear of death because 5 of his siblings would die before reaching adulthood. For
those who survived to adulthood, the average life expectancy of a Canadian was just 47 years.
-was raised in stark poverty in the rural, rolling hil country of western Ontario.
-many nights, he would recall later, he went to bed hungry.
-used to have to go to school in bare feet. the kids used to all make fun of him. only time he was allowed to wear shoes was
to church. used to hide his shoes by a corner fence and put them on just before he went to school.
Schoolhood; -building was a one-room stone schoolhouse, which still stands today.
-had to cope with the conditions that 21st century children could not imagine.
-students were perhaps crowed in 2 to a desk, sweltering if they were too close to the enormous stove or freezing if they
        were across the room.
-grades 1 to 8 were all packed together.
-the 1890's still held a traditional tenet of the school system; that childish enthusiasm had to be dampened and curbed, and                 youthful spirit bent to conformity. as Miss Eliza Boltonof the ottawa Model Normal School noted in an address to the
Ontario Education Association in 1892, if dogs and other domestic animals are trained from birth, should not the young
offspring of human beings be so too.
Fighting History; Fist fighting was an everyday life for young Canadian males in those days. It was how they settled their differences.
If anyone refused to aceepted a fight would be called a coward. He was an agressive, hyperactive who was forever
into schoolyard tussels. He ws always ready for a scrap and any agruements which usually were settled with his
fists. His high-strung nature made hima mediocre student. He found it difficult to concentrate for any length of time and as         a consequence, both his grades and his self esteem suffered. His superiors tried to channel his agression into sports,         entering him in a bare-knuckle boxing tournament for boys aged 10 to 12. he trounced three opponents to win 1st place.         He was thrilled with his achievement and the attention it got him. His parents were almost beside themself with anger. To encourage small boys to fight bare fists for over an hour, until one collapsed, while adults stood by cheering                 and laying bets, was shocking behaviour even for those times. For Sophia his mother, the boxing contest was the last         straw. She never approved of the brutal discipline used at school. After Sophia haering about his pugilistic triumph, she         was so distraught that she yanked him out of class and put him to work as a finisher in a near by furniture factory at age 10.
--his mother got him a job at the sawmill owned by her brother, Ben Dankert (Daniel Pufall's great great uncle). He hated that job since he only worked there for a week.
--as entered to his teens, he was in real danger of becoming a juvenile deliquent. On at least 2 occasions a police constable brought him home after he was caught fighting in public.
--when reached mid-teens, had lived in Hanover, Chesley, Hepworth, Preston, all small Ontario communities.
--January 28, 1904 in Detroit, changed his name to Tommy Burns because his mother Sophia nee-Dankert, objected his career to boxing.
--December 1908, became the 1st fighter to agree to a championship bout with a black boxer, jack Johnson to whom he lost his title in a
disputed championship match held in Sydney, Australia. The fight lasted 14 rounds before being stopped ny the police. The title was
awarded to Johnson as a technical knockout by the referee.
--was voted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
--only 4 people attened to his funeral and was interred in an unmarked pauper's grave until 1961 when as the result of fundraising
efforts began by a Vancouver sports writer, a memorail plaque was finally place on his grave.
--there is a plaque written about him which is displayed in Hanover, Ontario.

--she boldly introduced herself to Noah/Tommy when she was waiting for him outside his dressing room when he emerged.
--Noah/Tommy admitted later it was love at 1st sight.
--had no children.

Notes for JULIA KEATING:
--was a refined and delicate woman according to Noah/Tommy.
--one newspaper reporter described her as a "tall, graceful girl who is fresh from a convent school. She is bright and engaging, a good
talker, and fond of sport and amusement." Another praised her as "very charming."
--enjoyed nothing more than buying fashionable clothes--including her much-admired hats--and hosting tea parties.
--seldom went outside without a hat garnished with lace, ribbons and flowers.

When he met her, she was visiting her relatives in Polland.
--called her husband "Tommy" but insisted that others address him as "Mr Brusso."
--went by the name of "Mrs Noah Brusso." For his part, he called her "Jewel."
--began their married life by moving into a modest home in Los Angeles.
--Noah/Tommy was often away, fighting in other cities leaving her in a hot dry climate during an age without air conditioning.
--she may been fond of most sports but hated boxing; fainted at the sight of violence and in all the years they were married.
--she never attended one of his bouts, preferring instead to wait by the telephone for calls that he usually made from ringside.
--he was devoted to her and always made a point of calling to tell her he was unhurt.
--"I do hate him fighting.", she told one reporter.
--rest of Keating family had no qualms about his profession, possibly he was now a name boxer who was making good money.
